How To: Libraries

Most Scriptorian users become acquainted with study lists rather quickly, but libraries are another story. So this month's "How to" column will hopefully help you understand Scriptorian libraries a little better.

Scriptorian includes a scripture library containing the complete LDS standard works. Whenever you "add" a scripture to a study list, the study list is actually just "pointed" to the scripture library to get the necessary information. The same is true with all information you add to a study list- that information must be stored in a library somewhere. In the same way that many people can use their browsers to access the same information from a site on the internet, many study lists can point to and access the same information from a library. (If you want to learn more details about libraries, Scriptorian's help file contains additional information. From the main menu, press Help, then Contents. Under Scriptorian Topics, select the Libraries topic)

Scriptorian allows you to create your own libraries and your own study items. Libraries are created and modified through the Library Manager dialog. You can open this dialog by clicking on the Library button on the tool bar, or by selecting Edit, then Library Manager from the main menu. The controls in the upper part of the dialog are used to manage the library files, and the lower portion's controls are used to manage the selected library's contents. (For a more detailed description of the options and functions of this dialog, search for the Library Manager dialog topic in the Scriptorian help file)

For example, suppose you were collecting favorite quotes that you would like to memorize. You would probably want to store them in a separate library. From the Library Manager dialog, press the Create button to create a new library. Just supply a new name for the library (for example, "My favorite quotes") and then press the OK button to create the library. You now have a new library to work with. Because you have not added any items to it yet, the Library Contents list in the dialog will be empty.

To add new study items to the library, press the Create Item button. This will bring up the User Defined Study Item dialog. At this point you can type in the reference and content for the study item you would like to add. You can also select text from another application (like GospeLink or InfoBase), copy it to the clipboard by pressing the control and C keys at the same time (Ctrl-C), and then paste it into the User Defined Study Item dialog's text area by pressing the control and V keys at the same time (Ctrl-V). Add an appropriate reference and then press the Save button to save your new study item to your new library. (For a more detailed description of the options and functions of this dialog, search for the User Define Study Item dialog topic in the Scriptorian help file)

Remember that Scriptorian includes extensive help to guide you through much of what was presented here. For example, to get help creating libraries or adding items to a library, just select Help from the main menu, then How Do I? and Libraries. From the help window that appears, select Create a new library or Add study items to a library to get step by step instructions.
