Memorization Tips: Learning styles and mnemonics
Last month we introduced some simple mnemonics techniques for
remembering sequences. Here's some general information about creating
and remembering mnemonics. (This information is found on Mind Tools, Ltd.
"How Your Learning Style Affects Your Use of Mnemonics"
and "Using Mnemonics to Learn More Effectively" pages).
The way in which people learn affects the sort of mnemonics they
should consider using to store information.
The three main learning styles are:
visual (around 65% of the population)
auditory (about 30% of the population)
kinesthetic [movement] (around 5% of the population)
Most literature on mnemonics assumes the visual approach to learning
styles - mnemonics are recommended to be as visually appealing and
memorable as possible. If you are an auditory or kinaesthetic learner
you may find that this emphasis on imagery leads to ineffective
recall. In this case, try adjusting the mnemonics to suit your
learning style: if you are an auditory learner, use auditory cues to
create your mnemonics. If you are a kinesthetic learner, imagine
performing actions or using tools as the basis of memory techniques.
When you are creating a mnemonic, e.g. an image or story to remember a
telephone number, the more exaggerated and vivid the image, the more
easily it will be remembered and recalled. Additionally, try to
involve as many senses as possible when creating your mnemonic. The
important points to remember are that the mnemonic should clearly
relate to the thing being remembered, and that it should be vivid
enough to be clearly remembered whenever you think about it.
