How To: Study List Weighting
Scriptorian is designed to be used regularly to help you remember what
you have learned. When used regularly, one of its unique features,
called "weighting", becomes a big help.
When you do Quote It or Chase on a study list, which items you see
first are influenced by their respective "weights". An item with a
larger weight value is more likely to be presented than an item with a
lower value. Different weight values are maintained for Quote It and
Chase. You can easily see the weight values associated with each item
in the Q Wght (Quote It Weight) and C Wght (Chase Weight) columns
of the Study List window. You can even sort on each of these columns
by clicking the Q Wght or C Wght labels and then see which items
are most or least likely to appear in your next Quote It or Chase
session. This becomes more important as you develop a large review
list and only work through a percentage of items in the study list on
a regular basis.
The weight is calculated from two factors - help required and elapsed
time. For example if you missed or needed help with 20% of study item
A, but got study item B correct without any assistance, then study
item A will have a greater weight than study item B due to the "help
required" factor. In another case, if you required no assistance for
either study item C or D, but you did study item C yesterday and study
item D a couple of weeks ago, then study item D will have a greater
weight due to the "elapsed time" factor. By default, these two factors
are set to have equal influence in determining the weight value, but
you can alter this in the Quote It tab of the Options dialog. For
example, if you want to have elapsed time be a more significant factor
in determining an item's weight, you can set the "Elapsed Time" vs.
"Help Required" factor to less than five (setting it to zero means
that the weighting is determined by elapsed time only).
Scriptorian's weighting feature ensures that the items that you most
need to work on or review will be the study items that you are most
likely to see first in the list. This makes for an efficient use of
your time by helping you work on those items that need your attention
the most.
Remember that Scriptorian includes extensive help to guide you through
its features. For example, to get information about Scriptorian's
weighting feature, just select Help from the main menu, then
Index, and then type weighting to find the available help topics.
