Memorization Tips: Peg System
Although it requires some practice to master, perhaps the most
effective and versatile tool for remembering chapter and verses is the
peg system. The peg system, simply put, associates numbers with
familiar objects based on some simple rules. With numbers translated
to objects, it is then a simple matter to create linked picture your
mind to remember them by.
Each number is associated with a phonetic sound as follows:
Number
1
2
3
4
5
6
7
8
9
0
|
Sounds made by the letter...
t, d
n
m
r
l
ch, sh, j, g (soft 'g' as in 'germ')
k, c (hard 'c' as in 'case'), g (hard 'g' as in 'give')
v, f, ph
b, p
s, z
|
Because this system is based strictly on phonetics, numbers are
related to the sound of the word rather than the letters that compose
it. Also, vowels are ignored. For example, the word "knife" would be
equivalent to the number 28 ( kn = 2, f = 8) and the word "design"
would have a value of 102 ( d = 1, s = 0, gn = 2).
The Pseudonumerology site* has some
hints to help you remember these number-sound associations:
1=T T has 1 central stroke down
2=N 'n' has 2 strokes down
3=M 'm' has 3 strokes down
4=R R in the word "fouR"
5=L L resembles a 5-finger hand
6=J J with closed loop is a mirror of 6
7=K K contains two hidden 7’s
8=F handwritten f resembles 8
9=P P is a mirror of 9
0=S think of SOS as S-zero-S
If you take some time to learn these number-sound associations,
then you will be ready to put this technique to practice- and that
will be the topic of our next month's memory tips. So stay tuned!
