How To: Quote It Modes

Just in case you haven't discovered them yet, there are three different Quote It modes that help you memorize text: Learn mode, Fill in the blank, and Complete fill in. Each can be used to help you accomplish different memorization goals.

When memorizing a new item, Quote It's Learn mode provides the easiest way to quickly remember it. It works by taking away a few words at a time until you are able to "quote" the entire item. If you get stuck, the normal letter and word helps are available. When you leave Learn mode, Scriptorian remembers what level you were at for that item so that when you come back again to work on it you will be able to pick up where you left off. You can also reset the "learn level" from the Study Item Information dialog. When the task of memorizing might seem too difficult, Quote It's Learn mode makes it much easier to handle. So when facing a new item to memorize, just open it up in Quote It and select the Learn Mode check box to take advantage of this feature.

Because it is the default Quote It mode, everyone is likely familiar with the Fill in the blank mode. However, you may not be familiar with the ways that you can customize this mode. For example, the percentage of words left blank is normally set to be 50%, but you can change that to a different value from either the main or study list option dialog. You can also use a character other than an underline for letters that are not displayed. Fill in the blank mode is ideal for those items that you want to learn well, but are not concerned with remembering them 100% verbatim. For that, it would be best to use Quote It's Complete fill in mode.

Complete fill in mode may look daunting at first. In this Quote It mode, you are presented with only the reference and a blank screen- not even any "blanks" to give you a feel for the size or quantity of the words. However, after you have used Learn mode and/or Fill in the blank mode to learn a study item, then you should have no problem using this mode to help you remember it 100%. You can set up your study list to always run in Complete fill in mode by setting the mode in the Study List Options dialog. You may want to create a study list for review items that is set for this mode.

Remember that Scriptorian includes extensive help to guide you through its features. For example, to get information about Scriptorian's Quote It feature, just select Help from the main menu, then Contents, and then select the Quote It link from the Scriptorian Topics section.
