Memorization Tips: Learning the Peg System

The past two newsletters contained an introduction to peg words and then a brief discussion on how to use them for memorizing scriptures. We have also introduced a free study list of 100 peg words to help you learn this powerful memory technique.

However, powerful as it is, learning to use it will require some effort and time. Perhaps the task seems daunting to you. If so, we would like to recommend a web site that has broken the learning of peg words down to some specific steps. This information is taken from the Human Memory Site developed by neuroMod*. The steps to learning are as follows:

Step 1. Study the digit-sound groups (5 min)
Step 2. Verify the digit 'codes' of the example words (10 min)
Step 3. Use a trainer to learn digit-sound groups very thoroughly (15 min)
Step 4. Visualize and check up to 111 peg words (15 to 30 min)
Step 5. Use a trainer to learn the key words by heart (60 to 120 min)
(Note: you may want to use the 100 peg word study list
Scriptorian in place of their on-line trainer)

You may find that the learning technique used on the neuroMod site is what you need to master peg words and make this memory technique useful for you. When using their course, however, be aware that the peg words they have selected may not be the same as those provided in our 100 peg word study list, or the ones that work best for you. When you come across differences, always select the peg word that provides the best visual image for you.
