Memorization Tips: 2Know Software

In previous newsletters, we have introduced the peg system as a powerful tool for remembering numbers. The peg system comes in handy when you need to remember scripture references. You may also apply it to remembering phone numbers, social security numbers, birthdays and so forth. If you need a refresher on the peg system, you may want to check out the previous issues:
  • January/February 2002: Peg System
  • March 2002: Using the Peg System
  • April 2002: Learning the Peg System

  • The peg system uses a time tested scheme of associating words with numbers. However, since the mental imagery conveyed by these associations will vary for each individual, you may find that some words create stronger associations for you than others. Also, most peg system lists only support two digits, leaving you on your own for developing words for larger numbers.

So if you find that you need some help coming up with effective words for your numbers, there is a nice little tool available for you- and it's free. 2Know Mnemonic Software* is a free utility that you can download from the web. This Windows program allows you to enter a number and then it will provide you with many (sometimes hundreds) of words for you to choose from. So, for example, when looking for a word to associate with "96", you don't have to settle for "page"- you have over a hundred options to choose from, including words such as "Peugot", "Peach", "Beach", "Hibachi", "Bush", "Apache" or "Badge".

If you want a little help in putting the peg system to work for you, the 2Know software is a nice addition to your tool chest.
