How To: Of Libraries and Study Lists
The difference between libraries and study lists is often a point of
confusion for Scriptorian users. Hopefully this question and answer
sequence will help out.
If all of the scriptures, quotes, and so forth are in a study list,
what is a library used for?
Actually, a study list doesn't really contain any scriptures, quotes,
hymns and so forth- a study list only knows which library to retrieve
it from. All Scriptorian study items are kept in a library. Even if
new items are created via the Create/Edit Study List dialog, they are
placed in a library.
So, if study lists don't actually hold the study items, what are study
lists used for?
A study list specifies which items from a library that you want
to work on. As an extreme example, it would be a bit unwieldy to dive
right into all the verses contained in the scripture library. Instead,
using a study list, you pick the ones you want to work on. You can
also use the study list to segregate certain topics.
Study Lists also contain user specific information that tracks your
performance in Quote It and Chase. This information is not stored in
the library. That way, when Joseph has John 14:15 in his study list,
and Judy has the same verse in hers, their individual information is
kept separate.
How do I decide which library to put study items in?
Much of this is personal preference. You probably don't want to create
many small libraries as they might be difficult to keep track of and
to find study items in. One suggestion would be to create libraries
based on categories. For example, all your quotes could go into one
library, any vocabulary you are working on could go into another, and
so forth. Also, if you are using Scriptorian for homework, you could
create libraries based on your classes. When that course is completed,
and you don't think you will need that material any more, then you
have an easy way to "prune" the data from your Scriptorian system.
What's the best way to create new items - through the Create/Edit
Study List dialog or the Library Manager dialog?
Generally, if you are adding many items at a time, you should probably
use the Library Manager dialog as this supports the ability to create
multiple items without having to leave the dialog. If it is just a
single item, accessing the User Defined Study Item dialog through the
Create/Edit Study List dialog works fine.
