How To: Linx options in Chase and Quote It
Scriptorian's Linx feature brings great power and flexibility to the
study lists you can create. With it, you can include keywords,
multiple Topix relating to your basic study item, and also include
some brief notes. Previous newsletters have explained several Linx
features:
Linx introduction Creating Linx Linx templates
In this issue, we will take a look at how Quote It and Chase can be
configured to take advantage of Linx data. Linx options can be set
differently for each study list and are accessed via the Study List
Options dialog. To open this dialog, select Study List then Study List options from the main menu, or click on the Study List Options button
on the tool bar. In this dialog you will see two nearly identical
tabs- Quote It Linx and Chase Linx.
The only difference between the two "Linx" tabs is the Display
Linx/Keyword w/ Reference option under Quote It Linx. If this is set,
when you run Quote It, study items that have keywords associated with
them will have those keywords displayed just below the study items
reference. This can be helpful in providing you a brief summary or
topic for the item you are quoting.
The options in the Linx tab provide you great flexibility in what will
be displayed in your Quote It or Chase session. You can have a
combination of actual content, keywords, and/or Topix displayed. Keep
in mind, Quote It or Chase will present each study item once per
session. For example suppose you have two study items in your list.
Study item A has a keyword and three Topix associated with its content
while study item B has no Linx information associated with it. When
you run Quote It, you will be quizzed once on study item A and once on
study item B before completing the list. Depending on your Linx
options set, for study item A you may be presented with the actual
content, the keyword, or one of its three Topix- but you will not see
five variations of study item A and only one instance of study item B
in a single session.
Each of these options available in the Linx tab will be described
below using the States study list as an example. This study list is
included with Scriptorian and can also be downloaded from the web site. We'll start by skipping down to a couple options.
By selecting the Only use Linx Information option, then the actual
study item content will not be displayed during Quote It.This means
that you will only see keywords and/or Linx Topix. However, if a study
item does not have any Linx information associated with it (i.e.
keywords or Topix), then the content will be displayed. To prevent a
study item's content from being displayed in all cases, select both
the Only use Linx Information and Skip if no Linx information
check boxes. With these options selected, study items in the list
without Linx information will be skipped.
When you select the Mix in Linx Keywords check box, a study item's
keywords may be used in place of its content. For example in Chase,
with the States study list, you may be presented with the State's
nickname in place of the content.
Selecting the Mix in Linx Topix option will allow the inclusion of
any Topix items associated with a study item. For example, some of the
Topix included with the States study list are Capital, Motto, State
Tree, State Bird, Population Rank, etc.
The Only Specified Linx Topix check box allows you select from the
Study List Linx Topix list which Topix to include in your Quote It
or Chase sessions if the study list uses a Linx Template. For example,
with the States study list, you may want to only focus on state
capitals and ignore the rest. If your study list does not use a Linx
Template, however, then you will not be able to filter which Linx
Topix to include.
