How To: Scriptorian CSV File Format
The latest version of Windows Scriptorian includes support for Comma
Separated Values (CSV) format files. What does this mean?
A CSV type file can easily be read and modified in any of the popular
spreadsheet and word processing programs. This allows for easy editing
or use of the data in other applications- something that can't be done
with Scriptorian's standard export library files. Additionally, CSV
style files that conform to the Scriptorian study list format can be
imported back into Scriptorian.
Scriptorian can now export any study list to CSV format. You can try
it out by opening an existing study list, then selecting Study List,
then Export from the main menu to open the Export Study List dialog.
If you're familiar with exporting study lists, you will notice that
there is now a drop down box for you to select which format you would
like to export the study list to. When you click on the drop down
control, you now have the option to select "Comma Separated Values
(csv)". All you have to do is select this option, enter a file name to
save it to (Scriptorian will automatically append a ".csv" to the
filename), then click on the OK button to produce a CSV file of your
study list. You can also select the Include Linx data checkbox to
have any Linx data associated with your study list written to the file
as well.
Now go ahead and look at your exported file in your favorite word
processor application. You will see a couple lines that contain
information about the study list and then lines of data of your
exported study list items. The first line, or row, is the header row
and should look something like this:
"Reference","Content","Keyword","Comments","Topix Label","Topix Item"
This row defines the order and type of data that will appear in the
study list item rows. It also helps Scriptorian identify this file as
a Scriptorian compatible CSV file that can be imported back into
Scriptorian. The help file topic Scriptorian CSV File Format
describes the other "special" rows that can follow the header row. You
can check it out for more details.
Importing a CSV file is easy. Select Study List, then Import from the
main menu to display the Import Library/Study List dialog. In this
dialog you can either directly enter the file you want to import, or
use the Import Search dialog by clicking on the button to the right of
the Import Library edit field. The Import Search dialog will display
all files, both standard Scriptorian export libraries and Scriptorian
compatible CSV files, that can be imported. Once you have selected the
file you want to import, click the OK button to bring it in to
Scriptorian.
