How To: Foreign language characters
Many users have used Scriptorian to help them remember and learn
scriptures, vocabulary, etc. in languages other than English. Because
Quote It requires each letter of a word to be entered, this can be a
bit daunting when non-English characters must be entered. Scriptorian
has always supported the "Western European" character set (Windows
ANSI 1252/ ISO-8859-1), but it has not always been easy entering those
characters. Below are two methods for solving the international
character problem.
To enter international characters into Scriptorian, or any other
application for that matter, the easiest method is to use the
international keyboard associated with the language you are using. On
Windows, alternate keyboards are installed by selecting, depending on
you Windows version, the Regional and Language Options dialog or
Keyboard dialog from the Control Panel menu. Perhaps the most useful
international keyboard layout, for Western European characters, would
be the United States-International Keyboard Layout. A description of
the key mappings can be found at http://www.usna.edu/LangStudy/US-
InternationalLayout.html. You can also enter international characters,
using this alternate keyboard, by first typing the "diacritic" key
followed by the base character key. For example, to enter the character
'ņ', you would type the tilde key, '~', followed by 'n'.
Sound a little complicated? Well there's an easier way.
If you are uncomfortable switching keyboards, but still want to use
Quote It to learn text in a language other than English, a new feature
has been included in version 3.0.2.4 of Scriptorian. This new feature
of Quote It will let you enter only the base character of an
international character, removing the need for you to figure out how
to enter special characters. For example, if you were quoting the word
"seņor", just type "senor" and Scriptorian will accept the letter 'n'
for the international character 'ņ', displaying "seņor" correctly as
you would expect to see it. This greatly simplifies using
international characters in your Quote It items.
To see what international characters Scriptorian accepts, and what
keys they map to, select Help then Index from the main menu to bring
up the Scriptorian Help Index. In the index, select the entry
"International Characters" to bring up the "Quote It International
Character Support" help topic, which contains the character list.
